Kevin who/what?
Kevin has a talent for turning the ordinary into something wonderfully unexpected—whether that’s dreaming up quirky titles like “The Tomato Collection” and “Spinach Dip Pancakes” or creating music that gets kids (and parents) smiling. As a master puppeteer, he brings characters to life with humor, heart, and a little bit of magic. His children’s CDs have earned widespread praise, including two Parents’ Choice Fun Stuff Awards—proof that his playful approach really hits home.
For nearly 30 years, Kevin has been on the move, performing for audiences across the country—from the National Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C. all the way to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Hawaii. Whether on stage or on screen, he has a knack for turning everyday moments into something imaginative and fun.
Kevin also spent five years as a Community Engagement Librarian with Kent District Library, where connecting with families and sparking curiosity was all part of the job. These days, Kevin’s creative energy shines through in Wimee’s World and Our Show Today, interactive programs on PBS, that invite kids and grown-ups alike to jump in and play along.
A graduate of Grand Valley State University with a degree in Film and Video, Kevin lives in Grand Rapids, MI where he spends too much time thinking about too many ideas with his wife Stephanie (or anyone who will listen).
What some people have said:
"Kevin brings enthusiasm and great humor to his shows, adapting to the crowd before him. He possesses that rare ability of totally engaging his audience-teachers and students alike! The simplicity of activating an imaginative mind is the skill-set Kevin brings."
- Larry Carter, Appleview Elementary, Sparta, MI
"...exciting, engaging, and entertaining for the whole family! He's funny, he sings, and his puppets get the kids totally involved! I use Kevin's books in my classroom every year as a starting point to get my students writing..."
- Christine Williams, Hana Elementary, Hana, HI
"Kevin's show very gently SCREAMS joy, fun, creativity, imagination and wonder. Watching Kevin's performance is kind of like opening a birthday present when you were six. It starts with the eager excitement of wondering what it could possibly be. Then there is the total joy of ripping into it with all your senses, followed by the thrill of keeping a gift you've never imagined."
- Robert W. Dean, Former Executive Director, Grand Rapids Children's Museum
"Spinach Dip Pancakes" by Kevin Kammeraad is a book of whimsical wordplay, playful poetry, and mixed-media art. From cover to cover, the young reader's imagination is captured, ideas abound, and creativity can't help but be sparked. "Spinach Dip Pancakes is a quirky, simple, and diverse collection of thoughts enveloped in art begs to be read again and again, uncovering new ideas upon each return. An impressively original collection of original poems, lively songs and engaging possibilities, "Spinach Dip Pancakes" is very highly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library collections for young readers."
- Midwest Book Review
"The poems [Spinach Dip Pancakes] are funny and original and the art eclectic, weird, wise and wonderful."
- Elizabeth Bird, a Fuse 8 Production, a blog of School Library Journal
“Through careful planning and much work The Tomato Collection combines the appeal of artistic spontaneity with a fantastic and paradoxical swipe of what lies in the human imagination and beyond. Children will laugh at it; adults should be required to read it.”
- On-The-Town Magazine, Grand Rapids, MI
